Word Processing Quest 3: Graphics and Copyright

Video hosted at Vimeo.com and created by Kathy Campau and Renee Jorae

 (Link to PDF Directions)

Introduction

You have learned about Google Drive, how to use formatting tools in a document, and how to upload and download a file.  In this Quest you will learn how to insert a picture and a horizontal line to separate sections of your reports or documents.  You will also learn about copyright and computer ethics, to help prevent criminal behavior. Drive in!

Step 1 - In Google Drive, Open the RAIN of LEAVES poem you created in Quest 1.

At the end of the poem, space down 2 times and insert a horizontal line (check the Insert menu), then space down 2 more lines. Double check that you are aligned to the left.
To insert a horizontal line go to INSERT on the menu bar and scroll down to HORIZONTAL LINE.

Step 2 - Open your Word document with the Bruce Lansky poem. Copy and paste the poem by Bruce Lansky (that you previously copied and saved) into this document. In Google Drive, to cut, you must use Ctrl+C, and to paste, Ctrl+V. Don't forget to include the title and the author of the poem at the top of the poem.

Step 3 - Under the poem, you need to cite it properly:  This means give credit to the Author.

When we received permission to use Bruce Lansky's Poetry, Meadowbrook Press stated specifically how you are to cite it properly, see below:

Permission is granted for text only; no permission is granted for illustrations. In return for permission to use the material, we ask that you acknowledge each poem, its author, and its source in the same manner as the following example:

  •  All You Can Eat Rap. © 2000 by Bruce Lansky. Reprinted from if Pigs Could Fly and Other Deep Thoughts with permission of Meadowbrook Press. <www.gigglepoetry.com >.

  • Permission was granted by Alicia Ester, Permissions Manager, July 10, 2012 (View Permission )

Hint A: To create the copyright symbol use these keys: ALT+ 0169

Hint B: To create a link in your Google Drive document follow the steps below

1.  Go to the website you copied the poem from and copy the URL (website address).

2.  Highlight the words in your citation that you want to link to the
website then click on the icon in the menu bar that looks like a chain. hyperlinkchain

3.  Paste the address you copied into the URL box and click on OK.

You'll learn more about citation in Mission 7: Be Legal and Fair. But in the meantime, if you need help to learn how to properly give credit for other documents you could use a website that automatically formats your citation. One such website is EasyBib - CLICK HERE to see an example.  Since you also found the poem online you also want to link to the poem online - CLICK HERE to see an example of an online link.

Step 4 - Now we need to insert a picture that relates to our poem.

A. First we need to find a picture that you want to insert.  Go to http://www.pics4learning.com/  and search for a photo that goes with your favorite poem. Your SSI Department Chief  may have some additional websites for you to go to.

B. After you find a photo, double click on it to make it large then right click (or Control-click) on it and select SAVE IMAGE AS, then save it.

HINT 1: You will want to save it to a location that you can find easily, possibly a flash drive.

HINT 2: When you name the image include the photographer's name and then save the file. You will want to copy the website location as well.

C. A special note for agents that already wondered about copyright. The images on the pics4learning website are free to use for educational purposes, however you should always give credit to the photographer.

Policeman by Everaldo CoelhoYou SHOULD NOT use pictures that you have acquired through a search engine (such as Google images) unless you are searching for Creative Commons licensed images and you are using STRICT filtering. To see what Creative Commons means CLICK HERE  and/or watch this video - CLICK HERE .

Step 5 HOW TO INSERT AN IMAGE USING GOOGLE DRIVE DOC

A. To insert your image into a Google Document, look on the menu bar for a picture of a mountain, click on it and then CHOOSE AN IMAGE TO UPLOAD

B. Browse your computer's file space or flash drive and find the picture you saved earlier, then select insert.

C. Resizing the image - If the picture is too big when it appears in your document, click on it to "select it" and use the handles on the corners to resize it by dragging them in toward the center or outward to make it larger.

Step 6 - After adding your image you will want to cite it properly.
