Group Practice: Making Mental Summaries

Directions:

  1. Find a person in the room who is at the same point in the lesson as you.
  2. Pull up the reading text, "Study Finds NAEP Scores Rise When Students Are Paid" on one computer and the assignment on the other computer.
  3. List both names at the top of the assignment sheet.
  4. Using one of the two mental summary methods, each person thinks of a mental summary following each paragraph and tells the summary to the partner. The partner also thinks of a mental summary and shares it with the partner. If there is not agreement, discuss and determine the best mental summary for the paragraph.
  5. For the written assignment, write a summary sentence following one of the two formats for every three paragraphs. You should have four summary statements: one for paragraphs 1-3, paragraphs 4-6, paragraphs 7-9, and one for the end.
