Introduction to Week 7

In this unit, we will learn and employ the components to the 5-paragraph essay, a classic format for compositions. It is not the only format for writing an essay, of course, but it is a useful model for you to keep in mind, especially as you begin to develop your composition skills. It can also be a very useful way to write a complete and clear response to an essay question on an exam.

Basically, the format is:
1) an introductory paragraph which hooks the reader, gives any background information, & presents a thesis argument;
2) three supporting paragraphs, each dedicated to a different point supporting the thesis; &
3) a concluding paragraph.


We will break these steps down, and have small deadlines, each worth points, to help you compose the "big thing". Take the time now to browse through the unit, looking at the full details on the essay now as well as a line-by-line guide of what to include.

Here is the basic outline of assignments, with due dates:
* Thesis statement due
* Introductory paragraph due
* Three topic sentences due
*Peer Evaluator: Partner Preference: If you have a friend you want to have be your peer editor, tell me by this day. Otherwise I will just randomly match people and swap the drafts. Work on finding evidence.
* Find evidence (at least three quotations from the play); work on body paragraphs
* Work on your rough draft. Here is a sentence-by-sentence guide.
* Rough Draft due. Hard deadline.
* Work on peer evaluation.
* Peer Evaluations due. Hard deadline.
* MLA Format (how to properly format quotations).
*Editing Exercise - Dangling Modifiers
* Final Draft of Romeo and Juliet Essay. Hard deadline.
