Conflict

Conflicts are situations in which people, places, things or ideas are in disagreement with each other. Conflict can either be external or internal. When conflict is external, it may involve fighting between two people, a person fighting against nature, or even two competing ideas. Conflict does not necessarily mean physical fighting, though sometimes it can involve fights.

Internal conflict can be a single person, sometimes the main character, who is conflicted by two beliefs.

Conflicts are a critical part of a plot. They help determine the details of the plot. For example, the conflict in Romeo and Juliet is Romeo and Juliet's desire to get married, even though both of their parents forbid it. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout faces an external conflict with her Aunt Alexandra, and an internal conflict with competing desires to obey her father and to fight anyone who insults him.
