Extra Credit: Dune in Film

If you'd like to see some other interpretations of Dune you have two options. There's the 1984 David Lynch version and the 2000 SyFy Channel option.

Choose one or both of the films to view and complete the following:

Dune (1984) or Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000) Film Analysis
Directions: Answer each question thoroughly in essay form. You may complete this assignment with either film for extra credit if you have all of your other work turned in.

1. How does Paul’s characterization change between the text and the film? Think of things like motivations, actions, speech, relationships, etc. Defend your answer.

2. After reading the novel and watching the film, do you think the film makes Paul more heroic or less heroic? Explain.

3. Choose one of the changes the film makes to the text. Compare and contrast the two. Include your opinion of the changes. (This compare and contrast should go deeper than surface changes. Include references to theme, tone, symbolism, meaning, etc.)

4. Argue whether or not you think this film hurts or helps the story of Dune and how it (the text) will be viewed in generations to come.

5. Write a review of the film. Include commentary on acting, presentation, pacing, etc. Would you recommend this film?
