Assignment 3B: Strategy II (KIS for reading)
To get better at making inferences while reading, it is important to know how to "KIS." KIS is an acronym that stands for :
K = Key words. When you read, underline or circle the key words of the passage.
I = Infer. What did you figure out from the reading?
S = Support. You should have support from the reading for every inference that you make.
Think about KIS with the story from earlier in the unit.
'It's hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play the violin.' That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.
Remember our inferences? I've rewritten them here with the support from the text in parentheses.
You probably determined that the woman killed the man (empty revolver) because he was a terribly annoying when practicing the violin (learning to play). She killed him by shooting him (the 'empty' revolver). You also can infer that the woman is going to jail (the police are there). In addition, you probably understand that a studio apartment doesn't provide enough room for someone to learn an instrument (hard to live in a studio).
So, let practice the KIS strategy. Please read through the following story and underline key words.
Then, explain what you infer from this paragraph and for each point of inference, include support from the piece like I did with the earlier example (your support can be in parentheses).
The young woman walked a bit hesitantly towards the famous cozy Italian restaurant. She did not believe the excuse her parents gave her for having to meet her at the restaurant instead of at their house. To make matters worse, she was a bit grumpy because she was still catching up on the sleep that she lost during exam time. She noticed some cars that looked familiar in the parking lot. As soon as she walked through the door, she heard, "Surprise!"
