Overview of the Four Rs

In this section we'll watch a short video talking about the main elements of the four Rs of culturally responsive teaching: Relationships, Relevance, Realness, and Rigor. These four Rs will serve as the foundation for this learning module. As you listen to the video, consider:

  • The ways you currently incorporate the four Rs in your teaching.
  • Areas that you think you can improve.

The Four Rs

  • Relationships: Inclusion/Respect and Connection. Creating a community of learners who feel respected and connected to one another.
  • Relevance: Connection to experience and identities. Meaningful choices and personal relevance to the content.
  • Realness: Value and authenticity to real world experiences.
  • Rigor: Access, Engagement, Results. Engage students in challenging learning. Holding high expectations for each student by designing tasks that communicate that they are capable and their culture and language are assets to build upon.

When you've finished watching the video and feel you understand the concepts, move on to the next section!
