Wax Lab
Please Note: This is a lab. You will need the following supplies: a block of wax (attainable by the canning supplies at a grocery store), a small piece of metal, small piece of wood and a small piece of plastic. You will also need a pot, water and and a stove.
Purpose: To discover what happens when objects made of different materials are placed on a sheet of wax.
Hypothesis: IF we heat three different objects and place them on a sheet of wax, THEN _____________________________.
Materials:
1. Fill the pot with water and put the pot on the stove to boil.
2. Once the water is boiling, put in the pieces of metal, wood and plastic for
10 minutes.
3. After 10 minutes as gone by, using the tongs, place the pieces on the wax.
Make sure to put them far enough away from each other that they don't
fall into one another.
4. Wait 5 minutes.
5. After 5 minutes is up, take the pieces out of the wax and measure the
depth of the hole in the wax with the ruler.
6. Record your measurements and your observations in the data section.
Data Collection:
1. What did you observe happening to the objects as they had a high temperature (right away)?
2. What did you observe happening to the objects as they had a low temperature (near the end of the 5 minutes)?
3. What was the depth of the holes for the pieces of metal, wood and plastic?
Metal: ________________
Wood: ________________
Plastic: ________________
4. What substance transfers heat better? Why do you know that?
Once you click on "edit my submission", copy and paste everything in red into the text box to answer the questions and complete the lab.
