Applying Technology in Your Classroom

Problem-based learning (PBL), project-based learning (PbL), and inquiry-based learning (IBL) are changing the way we think about the use of technology in school. Technology was originally used to enhance drill and practice activities with multimedia. PBL, PbL, and IBL philosophies encourage research and problem solving skills that educational software doesn't. Technology became a tool to do the things that educational reform proponents have been training teachers to do, teach and practice higher order thinking skills. Technology now is about giving students access to as much information as possible to investigate topics and solve problems. Then students use the same tools that professionals use to accomplish the same tasks. That is the best way to prepare kids for the future. A separate computer class has value and does give students computer skills, but the students need to acquire experiences with technology. The only way to do that is to have them use those tools regularly in every class. That will also teach basic technology skills. The TEKS for technology applications in Texas are focused on students using technology as a research and productivity tool. Investigate the TEKS at the link below then create a discussion topic at the bottom of the page that tells how you believe the TEKS for technology applications can be addressed effectively across the curriculum. After your initial topic, you should respond to at least one post created by another participant in this training.

Remember, it really isn't acceptable to just tell what we don't have.
