- Read the entire article through one time or listen to the Mp3 file and follow along.
- Reread the article noting at least five words for which you are unsure of the meaning of the word as it is used in the article. Write these words in your notebook or download and print the "Thinking Sheet" that will guide you through this activity.
- As you look at the word, decide if inside the word strategies or outside the word strategies are appropriate and tell why you think so.
- Give your best guess as to the meaning of the word.
- Check your best guess in context. That means read your best guess in place of the unknown word.
- If you are not sure of a word meaning, talk to a friend or ask a teacher, but try it on your own first.
- Check the meaning of the word in the on-line dictionary.
