Ideas and Storyboarding

Story Starters

Story starters provide a few words or phrases to help students brainstorm story ideas. For the K-6 crowd, Scholastic offers a Story Starter tool to generate story ideas; the tool can also be used to create stories in varied formats, such as a newspaper article. For older students there's The Brainstormer and Story Starter websites. Another option for all students is the storybook set of online magnetic poetry.

Storyboards

Storyboards - series of sketches and notes - are a great way for students to plan out their stories. The Australian Center for the Moving Image has created an online Storyboard Generator for students to create digital storyboards using their own images and text, or using the library of clipart and images. Comic strip generators, such as ToonDoo or Kerpoof, can also be used to create storyboards as a starting point for longer stories and essays.
