Introduction to Cell Division

In this chapter, we’ll learn how cells reproduce through cell division. Cell division is important for growth and development, and for producing the special cells needed for sexual reproduction, the gametes.

First we’ll explore mitosis, the type of cell division required for growth, and we’ll discuss how it fits into the cell cycle. Next we’ll discuss meiosis, the type of cell division that produces gametes and is important for creating genetic diversity. We’ll discover how both sexual and asexual reproduction can be evolutionarily advantageous in different environmental situations.
