URL Shortener
A URL shortener is a service that takes any web address and shrinks it into a few characters. This is useful if you need to share a long web address (URL) in a post that limits the number of characters, e.g. a tweet. URL Shorteners can also create custom URLs that are easier to remember and can track the number of clicks a URL receives.
Example:
https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1UcvpnFM_TMp9AEmUl... >>> bit.ly/techtoolslist
bit.ly
bitly is a very reliable URL shortener that is compatible with many other third-party tools. bitly lets you customize URLs, track clicks, and provides QR codes.
Try a bit.ly bookmarklet or browser add-on to shorten a link without having to go to the bit.ly site.
goo.gl
If you'd rather not sign-up for another service, Google has it's own URL shortener (goo.gl), which saves the shorten links to your Google account. Goo.gl also provides tracking and QR codes.
Try the Goo.gl Chrome Extension or Firefox Add-on to shorten a link without having to go to the Goo.gl site.
