Culture Critique Remix
As you previously saw, the Remix and Remix Culture is something that is likely around to stay. We're living in a system where people almost can't help but break copyright law if they want to do something creative that comments on the things going on around them. You're going to get a chance now to make your own remix while respecting the limits of copyright law (something that by now you probably know more about than most people posting to YouTube). Watch the following video about Remix Culture and "Making new stuff from existing stuff" and we'll pick up after that with the next steps...
You can download the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video referenced in the video here if you still feel like you don't quite get it.
Final Project: Make a Remix that provides some type of commentary on your culture or society using copyrighted material legally. What message would you like to highlight or have others understand about your social group or culture. Is there something specific about it you'd like to ridicule? Those are all elements to consider. Before creating your video you should submit a purpose statement to your teacher that provides information about why you are trying to convey a particular message.
After viewing your video, the viewer should have a sense for what message you were trying to convey and maybe even be inspired to respond or discuss it further.
Requirements:
- Video should be a minimum of 1 minute;
- Use at least three sources of material (not including original content that you create);
- Posted online for sharing;
- Licensed under Creative Commons (fill out the form in this link to get your licence) so that others might reuse it as well
Remember that YouTube has video editing capabilities and you can combine clips and add soundtracks there as well. You may also want to use other tools like Screencast-o-matic or KeepVid to gather your materials.
