Although many publishers are coming out with digital versions of their textbooks, you often can't post sections of them or change them in anyway. Free, open source textbooks are changing this. Collaboratively created by other educators and education organizations, these textbooks can be modify as needed.
SAS Curriculum Pathways
SAS Curriculum Pathways is a collection of interactive, standards-based resources for grades 6-12 in language arts, social studies, math, science, and Spanish.
FlexBooks by CK12
CK12 FlexBooks is a collection of customizable, standard-aligned textbooks in STEM subjects. Books can be downloaded or viewed online. The books are compatible with multiple devices, and you can select which chapters to share with students.
HippoCampus
HippoCampus is a collection of free online courses in variety of subjects from Algebra to AP U.S. History. Most of the Hippocampus courses can be downloaded onto our Online Learning Portal (Moodle) to be customized or to be added to existing courses. Preview the courses on District 287's server.
Sophia
Sophia, a collection of more than 25,000 free multimedia tutorials, now has "pathways" in math and science.
Sophia Pathways lead students on a learning journey from the simplest to the most advanced concepts in a subject area. At each concept, the student has the ability to choose from several tutorials on the same concept. The student also can take quizzes along the way to determine if they’ve mastered a concept and are ready to move on to the next level.
Most of the tutorials on Sophia are licensed under Creative Commons and can be adapted as needed. Or, you can simply link to a tutorial, as is.
Wolfram Demonstrations
Wolfram Demonstrations is a collection of interactive, embeddable content for K-12+ in science, technology, mathematics, art, finance, and more. Wolfram also provides an authoring tool to create your own content.
Flat World Knowledge
Flat World Knowledge provides editable and annotable textbooks in multiple subjects; some books even include videos and other media. Flat World books are compatible with multiple devices, including eReaders. Because these books are licensed under creative commons, you can copy content from the books, as long as you cite the source and license your own work under the same creative commons license.
