To complete the Favorite Place activity you will have to log in to your Google Account and go to http://maps.google.com.

From there you can click on My Places and Create Map.

Use that map to share (Unlisted) with your students. Click on the Interactive Tutorial link to learn about dropping markers and editing the shared map.

Once you've named your map and given it a description you can click on Collaborate and Allow anyone to edit this map (since only those who have the link can edit it's not open to the general public.) Click OK.

From that same Collaborate Menu you can copy/paste the URL to your map in your course or create a shortened URL to it with http://bitly.com or http://goo.gl.
