Subunit 1, Lessons 3.1, 3.2 & 3.3 Introduction

Prior to starting lesson 3.1, watch the video below titled A Promise of Freedom. The video was produced by the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The first 6 minutes or so is a good review of prior learning. The last 6 minutes will get into more citizenship and immigration-related content. This video will serve as background for much of the content of subunit 1. Pay close attention to the following information on rights and responsibilities found toward the end of the video.

• How did immigrants benefit from the Civil Rights Act?
• What draws people to this country?
• In what ways can you exercise your citizenship responsibly? List up to 3
• Why is voting emphasized as being such an important responsibility?
• What two basic things does the video say make us all Americans?
