Rigor Activity I

In this section on rigor, we've covered a number of ways to increase the intellective capacity of students. For this activity, pull out your Above the Line Below the Line activity sheet you did earlier in the course.

Think back on the six students you chose for the Above the Line Below the Line activity sheet. Then type up some answers to the following questions.

1. Axiology - Consider your values and the values of the six students. How well do you think you understand the axiology of the six students? Are there similarities to your values in one group or the other? What are some ways you can use axiology to increase your effectiveness with your challenging students?

2. Belief - For your most challenging students, do they display signs of self-doubt or a negative mindset? How does that compare to your best students? How might you increase the capacity of your most challenging students to believe in themselves and their capacity to succeed?

3. Growth Mindset - What do you know about the growth mindsets of your six students? Often, high achieving students are victims of a fixed mindset as well, as they will shy away from challenging tasks and gravitate towards tasks they know they'll succeed at. What steps can you take to increase the growth mindset of some of your six students?
